Tips for Cleaning and Caring for your Vintage

So you’ve bagged your vintage, followed our tips on keeping it in the best condition possible- but oh no what’s this, a stain you have never notice before? Well ladies before you confine your best purchase of the week to bin of no return try some of our tips the team have been taught over years…
Say it but don’t always spray it.

Try to use clear, scent free anti per spirant when wearing vintage clothing, also try to wait up to twenty minutes after applying before getting dressed.  This may seem time consuming, but standard deodorants tend to be waxy or powdery and can cause damage to garments over time- don’t want them to deteriorate then ditch the dodgy deodorant!
Treat your clothes like your hair

Sounds like a strange comparison but it is true; you wash and brush your hair so do the same for your vintage it is delicate after all, and brushing is important for removing dust and crumbs from your clothing (hopefully not your hair). Try to match the type of brush to your garment, if the material and quite sturdy, e.g. wool  then wide bristle brushes are a likely investment, for more delicate materials try a lint remover machine and softer garment brushes. A cheeky tip is to use a small ‘horse’ brush that is often used for hair; it has a smaller surface area and is designed for coarser hair so your fabric should be pretty safe.
Found a spot?

Don’t start scrubbing the whole thing down, instead test a discrete section such as the hemline or the inside with a bit of washing liquid or washing powder and gage the reaction.  For cotton and linen a mixture of lemon juice and salt often effective, however, if you are not sure of the material break down then always take to a professional, luxury fabrics (e.g. tapestry or velvet)  must be professionally cleaned.
Do not tumble dry

Heat can damage the most precious of vintage wear, always hang to dry,  put on  a hanger to hold shape and never ever wring out an item instead lay the item flat  on a towel, roll and press out any water to speed up the drying process.
Hand wash with care

When hand washing, make sure light and dark colours are kept separate use either gentle washing liquid or baby shampoo.  When washing, soak instead scrub (for up to an hour) this may seem time consuming but your clothes will last much longer and you certainly won’t suffer from awful ‘dish pan’ hands!
